The Cyclops' Buzzbait by @jcorwinlures 📸: Ozark Gold & Silver Shiner For more than two years, I dedicated myself to researching, studying, and deconstructing what I considered to be the most effective buzzbaits ever produced. Countless hours were invested in gaining a deeper understanding of existing designs before attempting my own. To put something on the shelf that already exists would not only be a disservice to the angler, but also to myself. That time and effort proved invaluable. The body of this lure was born through a process of hand-sculpted prototypes, failed attempts, and countless refinements to achieve the right balance. Every component was purpose-built, no prefabricated shortcuts, with the singular vision of creating a true topwater performer. The result was something I firmly believe you won’t find anywhere else. Looking back, this process is what ultimately shaped the success of the Cyclops today. I’ll never forget the first fish I caught on the final prototype, the sun on the water, the stump I cast to, and the rush of that moment. It represented the culmination of years of persistence and passion. That memory reminds me why fishing and craftsmanship hold such meaning. What I cannot understand are the companies that bypass this process entirely, prioritizing profit over purpose. There’s a purity in creating something original and meaningful, so how can one justify products that lack vision, authenticity, or innovation? Do anglers not recognize when they’re being offered imitations rather than originality? As both a maker and a fellow angler, I simply ask that we consider this before choosing where to place our support. Whether big or small, ask yourself: Was this product researched and thoroughly tested, or rushed to market? Can I get this exact offering anywhere else? Been working on a heavier, slightly more aggressive take on the Beluga Shortie' series. 🫴🏻 This one’s a 7/8oz tin-based prototype I’m currently testing out, playing with new skirt setups using a mix of silicone, living rubber, and just a hint of tinsel for added flash. The full-size version will run a single #6 Hildebrandt, while the Double-Bubble (see photo) setup will feature a #5 and #6 in tandem. With the added weight and bulkier frame, this one is built to push water and get noticed...whether you’re fishing shallow, deep, or on the water all year long. As the seasons change and we transition into Spring, bass are on the move. 👈🏻 Water temps' are rising into the 50s' and becoming more stable. Fish are preparing for the spawn and actively hunting food. During this time bass are more likely to stage in and around shallow structure, like an isolated stump resting on a flat near deep water. (second image) ----- Thought process and baits: 👇🏻 One 🗝️ to this seasonal transition is color selection. With the water warming, especially in murky or stained shallow water, RED becomes an excellent choice. The bold and natural hues found in red-based lures often stand out, mimicking the appearance of crawfish or other natural forage bass prey upon. Red is known to be a productive color choice in the early spring months. ----- Two key baits to trigger a strike are our Cherry Bomb Double-Bubble Beluga Shortie and our Red Swamp Craw O.W.F. Whisker Jig. Begin by targeting the stump using the Beluga Shortie, focusing on Landing Zone One (marked red in second image). The strategy here is simple: cast past the stump on either side and methodically "bump the stump" during a slow retrieve. This action mimics distressed baitfish and can trigger an aggressive reaction strike from nearby fish. If those first two passes do not yield a result, we switch up and transition to the Whisker Jig, now focusing on Landing Zone Two (marked green in second image). Here, we slow down and pick apart the base of the structure with a precise, less invasive method. Often, multiple presentations from different angles can turn even the most disinterested fish into willing takers. I spent over a year developing the Cyclops' Buzzbait, starting with several hand-sculpted prototypes and finally arriving at this refined design. Every bend in every wire has been purpose-built and meticulously crafted. It was imperative for me to offer something truly unique that aligns with our brands core mission, to remain original from concept to production. This image highlights the most important aspects of any great buzzbait. Specifically, it features elements that set the Cyclops' Buzzbait above any other handmade buzzbait available today. The frame sits on a .045" spring back stainless steel wire and is molded using Grade A Tin with top shelf 4/0 @ownerhooks. Each size F bubble-blade is anodized, not painted, plated, or dipped. This means the color is impregnated into the metal electronically, making it the most durable color source available, resistant to fading or chipping. To finish, I wire-tie each living rubber skirt and triple crimp each rivet to ensure everything stays in place. Every detail matters. Our "Tin-Ball" project is nearly complete. 💥 🎥: Prototypes Notably, we have developed this product with the assistance and services of @row_innovations, one of the best design-to-production manufacturing teams in the game. Ask for Jake! 👈🏻 Tin is not a new material, but it is unique to the @jcorwinlures product line, as we use Grade A pure Tin to mold our Cyclops' Buzzbait and Beluga Shortie' Spinnerbait, giving these profiles their patented lift and durability. The material is slightly harder but less dense than lead, allowing us to use it specifically for our needs pertinent to this project. The balance within the "Tin-Ball" is achieved by extending and pushing mass from the jighead's ball, back and parallel to the hook shaft. This allows the added material to be used as a proprietary system of cones, ridges, and voids to serve as a bait keeping system for a variety of soft plastic applications. This system not only grabs, holds, and won't let go of your soft plastic, but it also allows the "Tin-Ball" to hover, stroll, and be steadily retrieved parallel to your target, making it appear more lifelike to nearby predators and keeping the lure even within the strike zone longer. Certain aspects of @jcorwinlures soft-plastic production help elevate our profiles above the competition; here's how. 📸: Creep 5.7" in our "Bullfrog" colorway. To begin, each batch of raw material is given a specific amount of @procurebaitscents Anchovy Oil. This oil is blended into the plastisol during the initial heating process, allowing the oil to fully infuse the mixture before being injected into our molds. The final application begins in post-production, with each soft-plastic profile being marinated in a combination of ProCure Garlic, Anise, and Trophy Bass spray.
